Sexual Assault Statistics

Since April is Sexual Assualt Awareness month, I thought I would start off a series of posts surrounding the subject with some sexual assualt statistics.

About the Victims

•Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted.
•1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men will be a victim of sexual assault in their lifetime.
•College age women are 4 times more likely to be sexually assaulted.
•15% of sexual assault and rape victims are under age 12.

Lifetime rate of rape /attempted rape for women by race:

•All women: 17.6%
•White women: 17.7%
•Black women: 18.8%
•Asian Pacific Islander women: 6.8%
•American Indian/Alaskan women: 34.1%
•Mixed race women: 24.4%

Sexual Assault Numbers

•In 2007, there were 248,300 victims of sexual assault.
•Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted.
•60% of sexual assaults are not reported to the police.
•Males are the least likely to report a sexual assault, though they make up about 10% of all victims.
•Reporting has increased by 1/3 since 1993.

About Rapists

•Approximately 73% of rape victims know their assailants.
•43% of rapes occur between 6:00pm and midnight.
•Only 6% of rapists will ever spend a day in jail.
•More than 50% of all rape/sexual assault incidents were reported by victims to have occurred within 1 mile of their home or at their home.
•The average age of a rapist is 31 years old.
•52% are white.

Effects of Rape

•Victims of sexual assault are:
•3 times more likely to suffer from depression.
•6 times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
•13 times more likely to abuse alcohol.
•26 times more likely to abuse drugs.
•4 times more likely to contemplate suicide.

-All of these statistics come from RAINN.

  2. I think you could report the stats like:

    Lifetime probability of being raped:
i.e. Given you are (gender, race), what is the chance that you will be raped in your lifetime at least once.

Also, you could ist rapist/race statistics like:
Lifetime probably of being a rapist:
    (gender,race): percent
i.e. Given you are (gender, race), what is the chance that you will rape at least once in your lifetime.

The last statistic you list "Give you are a rapist, the probability that you are a white male is 52%" is useful but can be misinterpreted especially when given after the lifetime rape statistics you list. This kind of errors in thinking are often falsely used to drive racism (think of terrorism fears and race). I guess the problem comes when reporting race/crime figures with the omission of other causal factors such as poverty or social status that I suppose may increase someone's chance of doing bad things. I have a hunch that rapist men are uniformly frequent across all social and economic spheres.

    Thanks for the post.
